So you’ve finally decided to do it. You’re coming to Barbados for Crop Over. First of all…excellent choice if I do say so myself. It’s definitely one of my favorite experiences ever, but it can be a lot to process if you’re new to it…so don’t worry, I got you covered!
Now this post will not address flights, accommodation, fetes or costumes because those are all hefty topics that deserve their own attention. But those things aside, here’s all you need to know to prepare for your first time at the Greatest Summer Festival.
1. Learn the Music
Please don’t come here and stand up and stare at us like you’re lost. You cannot truly enjoy the Crop Over experience if you don’t know the music. Even if you’re not a staunch soca lover, the fact that you’ve made the decision to come this far in advance means you have time to learn.
Learn songs from Barbadian legends like Lil Rick, Edwin Yearwood, and Alison Hinds. Listen to more recent hitmakers like Mole, Leadpipe & Saddis, and Hypasounds, just to name a few. And don’t just learn songs for this year, listen to soca from years before. Hit up YouTube, Spotify and Apple Music and start making playlists of old and new songs that you really like.
💡 Pro Tip: Julianspromos on YouTube is always the best place to start if you want to find music from any year.
2. Work on Your Endurance: Crop Over Is a Marathon, Not a Sprint
If you think it’s just one party and done, think again. Crop Over is weeks of fetes, beach parties, garden parties, cruises, and then the big finale, Grand Kadooment.
To survive (and thrive), you’ll need serious stamina. Start walking, dancing, or even taking a few cardio classes to get your body ready. It’s not about having a six-pack; it’s about keeping your energy up so you’re not that person who taps out by 10 AM on Kadooment Day.
💡 Pro Tip: Attend Classes by Bajans Spinny and/or Nandi if you get the chance to. They’ll give you all the moves you need to know for the season.
3. Choose your Events Wisely: Pace Yourself
Every fete is going to look like the one you can’t miss, but you have to know yourself. Choose your itinerary wisely based on what you know you can actually handle. Give yourself a chance to rest and have at least a couple hours of downtime. I can’t tell you how many people I’ve had burn out early in the first couple days of being here and never make it to the road Kadooment Day. Don’t be that tragic story. You’ve paid for the full experience, make sure you can actually enjoy your money’s worth.
4. Drink Water Like Your Life Depends on it (because it kinda does)
I don’t know if y’all know this…but Barbados is hot. Not “kinda warm” hot. Not “a lil humid” hot. Barbados can be “If I don’t get a fan on me soon I might pass out” hot. You’ll be dancing, drinking, and partying in the middle of the day and even the night times will have you sweating. Hydration is not optional (alcohol does not count as hydration!).
Make a habit of drinking water before, during, and after every event. Coconut water is your friend as it’s refreshing and loaded with electrolytes. And if you’re like me and think coconut water tastes like TRASH, then Pedialyte will do a similar job. Staying hydrated will also make it easier to recover from any potential hangovers the next day.
5. Dress for the Weather
This point goes hand in hand with number 4, but it’s definitely worth mentioning. Yes, you want your Crop Over outfits to be cute. But you’re coming to a festival in the Caribbean at the height of Summer. Leave the long sleeves, blazers and jackets at home. You have no need for them here.
Think light, breathable fabrics that you can move, dance and sweat in. For me personally, less is more at Crop Over, but dress to suit your own style.
💡 Pro Tip: Bring Sunscreen and a Portable Fan. Trust me on this.
5. Follow Crop Over Experts (Like Me!) to Stay in the Know
Want the inside scoop? The best parties? Which bands are worth your coins? Follow the experts. That includes yours truly (👋🏽 hi!).
